The Siege by Kathryn Lasky

Book #4 of the Guardian of Ga’Hoole series begins by giving its readers some background information on Kludd, Soren’s evil brother who is now known as Metal Beak.  As the book unfolds, it becomes obvious that all is not well at the Great Ga’Hoole Tree.  The leaders are worried about the threat of the Pure Ones and more information needs to be gathered to decide what should be done.  Soren and his friends are hand-picked to fly a secret mission back to St. Aegolius Academy for Orphaned Owls to act as spies and get that needed information.  They are very successful in their mission but Soren is seriously injured.  His recovery time allows the chaw members to discover that Metal Beak is planning on attacking the Island of Hoole where the Great Ga’Hoole Tree is.  Soren and his band make it back to warn the Guardians of this latest threat.  The book ends with another battle with Metal Beak.  Again the Guardians of Ga’Hoole win the battle but not the war.  Kludd lives to wreak his revenge.  The act of war changes certain members of the Tree.  At least one becomes a traitor and one very unlikely owl decides that it is best not to be on the defensive but rather to take the offensive.  We will have to wait until book#5 to find out what her plan is and how Soren will be involved in it.

D-11 and P-9 enjoyed this book.  They have a logical guess as to who the traitor might be and are talking about what they think will happen next.  We are getting some good conversation out of these books and it has prompted D-11 and P-9 to study a bit more about owl pellets.  I told the boys that owl pellets can be ordered through a homeschool catalogue for the purpose of dissection.  I think that they would like to find one out in the woods.  Neither of them is too keen on the dissection part.  We spotted a tree where an owl likes to perch near my parents’ home.  The next time we are there, we will have to look around its base for owl pellets.
